Maintain or Plant Additional Shade Trees: planting shade trees such as avocado or durian helps regulate the microclimate, reduce direct sunlight, and minimize evaporation. This prevents coffee plants from experiencing heat stress during dry periods. Shade trees also adjust the C/N ratio, reducing the risk of early flower bud differentiation. However, the density of shade trees should not exceed 100 trees per hectare to avoid reduced yields due to lack of sunlight.
Balanced Fertilization: This helps coffee plants grow robustly and effectively regulates the C/N ratio during the rainy season. This ensures that the plants can withstand short droughts and reduces the risk of early flower bud differentiation. When coffee plants are adequately and properly watered, the flower bud differentiation process becomes more synchronized and concentrated.
Proper Shaping and Pruning Techniques: Thoughtful shaping and pruning create a balanced canopy and a healthy reserve branch system. This reduces the impact of short droughts and helps the plants achieve simultaneous flower bud differentiation during extended dry conditions lasting 1 to 2 months.
Watering at the Right Time: During the rainy season, coffee plants may experience short droughts. When the plants are differentiating flower buds, if dry weather persists, watering at the right moment will help ensure that flowers bloom simultaneously (80-90%). Watering should occur when the flowers reach a certain size and the soil moisture is around 27% for optimal results.
