Solutions to Help you Prevent Early Flowering in Coffee Plants

Addressing the issue of early flowering in coffee plants can be effectively achieved with solutions from the Tay Nguyen Institute of Agricultural and Forestry Science. Maintaining appropriate shade for the plants, applying balanced fertilization, shaping and pruning the branches correctly, and watering at the right times will help coffee trees develop steadily and achieve high yields.

Don’t let early flowering in coffee plants reduce your yield! Explore effective solutions from the Tay Nguyen Institute of Agricultural and Forestry Science to maintain the quality and quantity of your coffee garden.

The Tay Nguyen Institute of Agricultural and Forestry Science has proposed several effective solutions to address the issue of early flowering in coffee plants:

Maintain or Plant Additional Shade Trees: planting shade trees such as avocado or durian helps regulate the microclimate, reduce direct sunlight, and minimize evaporation. This prevents coffee plants from experiencing heat stress during dry periods. Shade trees also adjust the C/N ratio, reducing the risk of early flower bud differentiation. However, the density of shade trees should not exceed 100 trees per hectare to avoid reduced yields due to lack of sunlight.

Balanced Fertilization: This helps coffee plants grow robustly and effectively regulates the C/N ratio during the rainy season. This ensures that the plants can withstand short droughts and reduces the risk of early flower bud differentiation. When coffee plants are adequately and properly watered, the flower bud differentiation process becomes more synchronized and concentrated.

Proper Shaping and Pruning Techniques: Thoughtful shaping and pruning create a balanced canopy and a healthy reserve branch system. This reduces the impact of short droughts and helps the plants achieve simultaneous flower bud differentiation during extended dry conditions lasting 1 to 2 months.

Watering at the Right Time: During the rainy season, coffee plants may experience short droughts. When the plants are differentiating flower buds, if dry weather persists, watering at the right moment will help ensure that flowers bloom simultaneously (80-90%). Watering should occur when the flowers reach a certain size and the soil moisture is around 27% for optimal results.

Targeted Watering as Needed: Targeted watering is not necessary for all early flowering periods, especially when the blooming rate is low (<10%). Only water when the blooming rate exceeds 10% at the end of the rainy season or after harvest, using a moderate amount of water and watering just once to avoid disrupting the flower bud differentiation process during dry conditions.

Implementing these solutions will help coffee plants avoid early flowering and ensure stable yields.

When the branches crawl over the top of the pole, bend four branches in a cross shape in the afternoon to avoid breakage. Choose healthy, thick mother branches, creating a canopy based on the principle of one mother branch for one or two side branches. In the second year, do light pruning; at the end of the third year, prune the older branches, keeping about 100 branches on the pole.

Choose high-quality seeds and prepare pots with drainage holes. Use nutrient-rich soil by mixing clay soil with chicken manure, rice husks, and coconut coir. Germinate the seeds by exposing them to sunlight, soaking them in warm water, and then wrapping them in a damp cloth. Once the seedlings develop, transfer them to larger pots or the garden. Ensure they receive plenty of light, water regularly, fertilize, and provide support for the plants. Watermelons will ripen 80-90 days after planting.

The technique for growing and caring for red artichoke flowers includes selecting good seeds, preparing loose and well-drained soil, and sowing seeds with a spacing of 65-90 cm. Care for the plants by watering regularly, applying organic fertilizers periodically, and promptly controlling pests and diseases. Harvest red artichoke flowers after 45-50 days, avoiding harvesting during rainy weather to maintain quality.
